About Us
Yolanda Wallace – Founder and Executive Director of Mother’s War On Violence Ministry, NFP
Yolanda Wallace is a passionate advocate, community leader, and survivor who has transformed her tragedy into a powerful force for change. In 2006, Yolanda tragically lost her son, Jon Buckley, to gun violence, a loss that ignited her dedication to fighting against violence in her community. As the founder of Mother’s War On Violence Ministry (MWOVM), Yolanda has become a beacon of hope and support for families affected by violent crime.
Her journey began with the creation of the Jon Buckley Memorial Garden, a peaceful space dedicated to victims of violence, in partnership with the Peoria Park District. The garden, located in downtown Peoria, serves as a public refuge for those in mourning, offering a place to reflect, heal, and honor lost loved ones. In 2022, the garden celebrated its 10th anniversary, marking a significant milestone in Yolanda’s journey from personal loss to community healing.
Beyond the Memorial Garden, Yolanda has spearheaded several community initiatives, including the “Who Killed Me” campaign, the Community Day of Remembrance, and added Tip 411, a public crime-solving information tip line to the Who Killed Me Posters. Her leadership and advocacy efforts have made her a prominent voice for victims of violent crime, particularly in Peoria, where she works tirelessly to fill the gaps in support services for those affected by violence.
In addition to her work with MWOVM, Yolanda serves as a victim’s advocate, specializing in supporting families who have experienced a tragic loss. She is also involved in youth development through the Illinois Association for the Education of Youth Children (AYEC) and serves as a hospice advocate. Yolanda holds a background in childhood development and continues to serve her community in a bi-vocational capacity.
A devoted wife, mother of four, and grandmother, Yolanda’s work is deeply rooted in her faith and love for her family. Her resilience, dedication, and compassion continue to inspire countless individuals, and her efforts are making a tangible difference in the fight against violence in the community.
Yolanda is available for speaking engagements and is always eager to connect with families and organizations interested in victim advocacy, community organizing, and violence prevention. She can be reached via email at mwavm@yahoo. or online at the Jon Buckley Memorial Garden Facebook page.
